Computers are gadgets that have made the life of man progress with a lot of ease and comfort. They have permeated all facets of life and made the various processes and activities effective and efficient. With the widespread of internet usage, there has been a surge of computer viruses, worms and Trojans at alarming rates. Hackers are also devising new techniques, by the day, to hack into even the most complex of systems and it is for these reasons that information security companies are creating controls to protect the integrity of data. Computer security is paramount for computers that have a shared network. One can often find related messages on accessories such as mouse pads. Stand alone computers are not that much exposed to security risks. Usage of computer networks and related resources, especially the World Wide Web, has extended widely and this had led to the concept of data integrity or computer security being given key consideration.
Three major computer security elements are: authentication, confidentiality and integrity. Authentication basically means that the computer terminal users are who they claim to be. The various resources within the network should only be accessed by legit and authorized parties. Confidentiality is a concept that is tied to privacy or secrecy. It shields off unwarranted breaches that may lead to data leakage and subsequent embarrassing or disastrous situations. Integrity means that the originality of data/information is intact. Alterations or erasures distort the validity of information.
The three elements mentioned above are of key importance but data privacy is very crucial to information security managers whose routine work revolves around internet users. Most users of the World Wide Web often feel that they have nothing to cover when they are signing up with a particular service, not knowing that privacy is about all about limiting exposure of personal information. This information may be sensitive or not. Nowadays, data in electronic form is easily transmitted amongst firms and also unrelated pieces of information can be quite easily linked up. Hence, there is a need for computer security promotional items to raise the awareness among computer users.
